I think I got it straight now:

Those numbers we are discusing about are not absolute nor a quick reference for altitude detection ranges or anything because the matter is all about the unit's hardware cabalities, so, to get accurate informed about the unit's altitude detection ranges you have in all case to switch between altitudes (under risk of taking a wrong decision).

So, no matter the B-2 Spirit (or whatever) has a "down 4" range (or whatever), it can not detect deep sea units because it is not equipped for it, so the number (down 4) do not represent an absolute range value, because it rall elies on the hardware carried up by the unit. So to get an accurate report of the unit's actual hardware detection capabilities you just have to switch between altitudes

Maybe I overestimated the whole thing thinking those numbers as an independent and absolute source of information, as it would be simple and practical to gather on a jiffy peep (as with the weapon range screen is), but know I find out (thank you guys) that those numbers are really just to be interpretated in accordance with the (horizontal) detection range screens

Or you can use up and down on the d-pad in the unit info window to see the different detection ranges.

I've also listed them in the unit list (most of them, anyway) which you are free to copy/paste/print from to keep at hand.

It is one of the more challenging elements of the game to grasp due in part to the way it's presented in the user interface. Certainly more thought could have gone into it than did.

One of the most important thing to consider with elevation is to be able to use it to your best advantage. Certain air to air missiles will allow you to fire on air targets that are at a level either one above your level or below... this means that if you engage an enemy that is equipped with counterattack weapons that can only affect someone on their same elevation level then YOU get to attack and they cannot counterattack - because your weapon crosses elevation planes and theirs cannot.

Elevation affects how many hexes you can attack a target from also. Relatvie elevation can be the key to wearing out an enemy. Sort of like the fast jabs in a boxing match before the knockout punch.

As always the best way to beat an enemy is to be able to hit him without him being able to hit you back.

Yeah, some of the big nasty SAMs can't fire so far at low altitudes, but up high, if they can see yoou, you're toast. Wink
