I think both points about the AC130 and the A10 are correct. I use both. In my style of play I will purchase A10s to support attacks within close proximity to airports/easy resupply. In a longer range battle I go with the AC130 because it does have long legs and can go for ages before it needs resupply.
Now if money is not an issue, then neither is this argument to me, because I purchase neither unit. I always go for the pricey stealth units which do both the AC130 and A10 jobs at a much higher efficiency.

Late in the game, my bombers (usually with the cruise missles and S ranked at this point) are the one's that truly dominate.
Lol, but you make an interesting point. There are more aircraft than the A-10 and AC-130, though they are pricier, they usually have more advantages than both aircraft. Though, that's a discussion that I won't delve into with a 10 foot pole.

I find the 'spooky' to be good to take out deployed artillery, any aircraft sitting in the airport, any chopper on the ground/city, supply trucks, transports, etc. It's a good cleanup unit too.
It's got a good amount of ammo, has good range, and frees up my artillery and armor units for other things.

I just started playing DS this week. How do you get the AC-130?

I used the win mission cheat to unlock all units
I didn't like mission mode much anyway, I just won the first two of them without cheat....I prefer free mode, it's been a lot more fun than MM.

I loved that mission. Hehe, nothing like chewing up soft armor.
