Whenever I select a unit and it displays the weapon types/ammo available, I've noticed there is either a little blue [A1] next to the weapon name, or a red [A]. What does this mean?

I've looked through the tutorials twice and the book several times trying to find the meaning so as to better strategize (or strategerize if you prefer).

The blue A1 indicates a weapon that can be used against an adjacent enemy, whereas the red A indicates a weapon that can be used in attack, but not against an adjacent enemy. Some air-to-air weapons used by older Russian and Chinese fighters suffer this disadvantage. You can draw your own conclusions about their limitations from this .

There is also a 3rd Weapon Type, a Green D. This weapon can ONLY fire in a counterattack as it's a defensive weapon only. This is typically on Russian Tech Aircraft such as the Chinese Badger and the Russian's ECM Aircraft and is actually the tail gunner position. However, it's only small range so it's only good when the enemy isn't pelting you with long range missles.

Although it's really funny when an enemy aircraft is gunned down by a bomber, or an ECM plane . Had that happen a few times, always really funny.
