Dragon Quest 8 - This game has pretty much been owning my play time lately...well, that and some Dai Senryaku for my strategy fix but back to my (cough) 26 hours of DQ8. I was immediately put off by the fact that the graphics were a complete Dark Cloud 2 rip off. Not that DC2's graphics weren't amazing but I didn't want the same thing all over again. Not long into the game the enemy animations in combat soon captured my heart and I forgave them their reuse of so much code. The enemy animations are fantastic, some of the best in console rpg experience and rivalling Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land in that regard. I've counted as many as 8 (maybe more...) enemies on screen at once and with multi-enemy affecting weapons it gets pretty devastating.

The music however is really droll, it's disney meets gershwin and it makes me want to sleep. Turning BGM off unfortunately also turns off the battle fanfare which detracts from the excitement a bit. I suggest popping in the FFT soundtrack or whatever else appeals to you when playing DQ8.

Everything about the game is pretty much classic Dragon Quest only in 3D (so far) and breaking jars and barrels is as fun as ever. Skills management isn't too deep which some may find nice, others will find shallow. I'm finding the pretty easy choices at level up to be nice in a "streamlining" kind of way. There do seem to be some other elements emerging (alchemy) that are definitely going to lead to some gaming pleasure as well, I've already crafted much stronger weapons and armor for three of my party of four.

I'm about to hit the casinos (in the game). Whee. Razz

Load times are not distracting though going from combat to exploration sometimes lags on my crappy ps2. Speaking of exploration, this game has it in spades The world is laid out like a classic RPG's, only you explore it in 3D with a day/night cycle--though no "dates" so you can rest without affecting events...some previous DQs have had such a cycle did they not?

Despite all of this game's coolness (character animations, world to explore) it so far comes off as a bit bland. Fortunately if you're into the monster/item collection aspect this game will satisfy. One minor feature that DW7 had that this game should have is a "remember" my commands option for combat. Maybe it's there and I just haven't looked hard enough.

I have been (was) having a good time with Dragon Quest, I love seeing the ole enemies (retro) come on screen. I write "was" having fun, as I have not been able to play it in a few weeks, but I will be able to shortly! Now, back to work, like a chump. Twisted Evil
