That's one of the problems I've had with this game, the range of some of the weapons. Okay, guns (except for howitzers obviously) have a range of adjacent, but the entire point of missiles was to project destructive power over a greater range. TOW missiles might be limited in range compared to other missiles, being wire guided, but other kinds of AT missiles (like to Konkrus mounted by the BTR-T) have superior range as compared to tank guns. To make TDs more useful, giving their weapons a range of two at least would be good.
Which is why I think the Japanese TD is the best in the game as far as tactical utility, and that's kind of embarassing really - IT'S A TRUCK! A truck with missiles, just with Endur 1, no armor really, but it has ranged AT missiles with a range of 3. This alone makes it better than any other TD unit in the game. It's more expensive too (250 if I remember correctly), but it can be really potent.
Otherwise, as I said before the Type 89 (China) is a pretty good gun destroyer. I didn't realize this before, but it has the best armor of any TD unit in the game (32%), and it mounts that 120mm, making it potent. It's great for parking in low-combat intensity areas where your enemy usually sends capture units to limit your productive base. If it gets the first attack against any such unit, it will usually cause a lot of damage (unles you're playing on hard, in which case you can completely miss with an S class unit).

I personally think that the ranges are goofy simply because there isn't a real set scale in place. I mean, machine guns do NOT reach as far as a 120mm cannon shell. I dunno, maybe it's just me, but while they did do a good job for most of the ranged weapons, they still could have done a LOT more.

I do like how the Russian BRDM-3 is a 'light' unit so i can land a chopper and drop one of them off with an infantry. So two choppers in the enemy backfield could give you two infantry to capture stuff and a pair of TD to take double up on the enemy units that rush to the scene.
(I think it's the BRDM-3 anyways....)

Because all the bigoted, ignorant, narrow-minded, neo-conservative, school-yard-bully-Bush-huggers need a group upon which to vent their inferiority-driven angst. Labels, gotta love em.
The rhetoric in the preceding posts is just grotesque in its obviousness. Of course I should expect as much from a "television audience."
Can we get back to the games please? |
I'm not sure what you mean by 'television audience' - i rarely watch TV anymore, nothing worth seeing for the most part. However i do apologize for the political injection previously. But more to the subject as a tie in, since thanks to the school-yard-bully-Bush:
What TD's are being used in the middle east by us/allies right now? How do the wheeled versions compare to the track versions in the desert settings? I was debating with a friend of mine on whether or not the sand would cause track TDs/tanks, etc more trouble than just a heavier duty wheeled vehicle.
The TDs in the game have a nice range to them so they can often be used as 'interceptors' for advancing ground units to slow them if not stop their advance while you bring up your own tanks, etc.

Tracks are better on sand due to the fact that they have a wide base. The wheels are more prone to "sinking" into the sand and becoming stuck, but that's assuming it's soft sand.
As for TDs in use in the Middle East, in use would be the Humvees equipped with TOWs, LAVs in one of several TD "kits" and anything the Army might be fielding in addition to the Humvees.

Lmao, yeah that pretty much sums up the extent of it. Although, the LAV TD variants are kind of interesting. Namely, the one that has a fully functional tank cannon mounted on it.

ElricJc finally someone else verified the Japanese TD has range 3 that the other countries are lacking which I find odd. Probably just a balancing issue however I am looking forward to another DS game hopefully for the XBOX 360 or any game platform that improves upon this game

Considering the power to be had in the 360, I would like to see more TBS games on the console, but they have got to make sure they utilize the power and give us lots of content, editors and the such.
On a side note, they could really add to the graphics of the game and say add in much nicer animated battle sequences using 3D units (With textures!) and not just 2D sprites. While most would still turn the animations off, seeing the battles in 3D would make for a really nice touch.
