I posted this same topic of the GameFAQs boards...I want to reach a wider crowed because I'm really interested in it.

Is it just me, or whenever you try to be France in this game you almost automatically lose? I understand the game tries to level out the countries so one isn't way more powerful than the others, but geez... Even against some Chinese without much money I lost. I hope this isn't a realistic view of the French military, because it seems MacGuyver with a paper clip, gum, and some string could take them out.

Another question...are there those here that like to use France? If so...please gimme some kinda strategy, because I don't like losing to Communists. Fictional or not.

Well, in real life, the French army is largely aimed at operations in the 3rd world (generally their "ex" colonies, like the Ivory Coast). So their equipment is more aimed at "peacekeeping" operations than fighting other armies. (Since the French don't really do that last thing, to be honest)

Also, in real life, the French and Chinese would never fight. France is essentially an ally of China. Not so long ago they did joint naval maneuvers with China off Taiwan. (China wants to invade Taiwan. Presumably this was a sign that France might help...)

I have played as the Frech several times and it was mostly a strategy of self propelled artillery and what air power you can muster. This usually includes an overwhelming force of helos. The other part of the strategy is try to manage an economic strangle. Let them blow their cash, hit their supply and capture units and pick off their combat units from afar. Twisted Evil

Essentially, force the enemy to string out their supply force and prevent them from capturing a supply base close to the front. Heavy recon with artillery will cripple their advancing force. Mop up with attack helos and repeat until the enemy is low on cash and cannot reinforce themselves effectively. Twisted Evil

Also remember that the most famous, most elite unit in the French Military is the Foreign Legion, made up of... well, foreigners. Sacre bleu.

Well, then why are you playing France? The French government is as much socialist as capitalist:

The Cia World factbook:

Quote:
France is in the midst of transition, from a well-to-do modern economy that has featured extensive government ownership and intervention to one that relies more on market mechanisms. The Socialist-led government partially or fully privatized many large companies, banks, and insurers, but the government retains controlling stakes in several leading firms, including Air France, France Telecom, Renault, and Thales, and is dominant in some sectors, particularly power, public transport, and defense industries.

The definition of Socialist:

Quote:
so·cial·ism ( P ) Pronunciation Key (ssh-lzm)
n.
Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy.
The stage in Marxist-Leninist theory intermediate between capitalism and communism, in which collective ownership of the economy under the dictatorship of the proletariat has not yet been successfully achieved.

Interesting. It seems like France hasn't decided if it likes capitalism or communism more. They should ask Castro how communism has worked out for him. Actually, he'll say its worked out just fine, maybe they could ask the average guy on the streets of Cuba, when the state police aren't around to feed him his answer.... Very Happy

The French trying to revive their Indo-Chinese colonial aspirations, perhaps?

Lol, gotta love how politics made it's way over to the forums. Laughing

Of course, War is naturally a part of politics, but it's funny how off topic we just got. Cool

Wasn't it Von Clausewitz who said that war was merely an extention of politics?

Name rings a bell, so you're probably right on the name. For sure I know I've heard that quote more than once before. Cool

If you choose to play France you should be happy that the computer doesn't automatically surrender your forces the moment your first city gets taken.

But seriously - it was the fault of the French politicians and not the military that they faired so poorly against the Nazi advance. Even when there was an indication of the coming storm, the French govt didn't want to take a threatening posture. It feared provoking Germany.

Even after armed German forces walked in and claimed Alsace-Lorraine (i probably spelled that wrong, i usually do for some reason) the French did little more than wag their finger at the Germans. They deserved to get overrun then and deserve the reputation as p*s*ies now.

And by the way the word Heil means 'salvation' in German. Hitler was viewed as the salvation of the Germans from the oppression of the treaty of Versailles... everybody needs a hero....

Lol, see France just needs to get Medieval all over again. Twisted Evil

Actually, I'd like to see France get really PO'ed and start stomping some folks. They'd naturally get their behinds handed to them on a silver platter if they tried taking over Europe as a whole, but it would be fun to watch. Laughing

Actually I don't mind using the French in most situations. In fact I prefer using them over the Israelis, Chinese, Germans, and British in most situations. They have no exceptional units, but they have good units that can be exploited to their best advantage when deployed properly. They also have a balanced force, giving them an advantage over other nations which suffer from a particular weakness.

The French have a light carrier, putting them above four other nations in the game, and they have a top-line conventional ASF, the Rafale D and M, which by the numbers matches up well with the F-15, at least in the game. They also have the Jaguar A attack jet, which is light on fuel, but carries a load of 3 modern guided bombs, along with a descent gun and a Magic 550 AAM for close defense against air units. They also possess a good SPH, the AU-42, which is superior to anything the Chinese, Israelis, and Russians have to offer.

They also possess modern AD weapons, such as the Hawk and Patriot missile, which the British force mysteriously lacks, which is a necessity in any force I have where air units are deployed. The British are very weak in AD weapons, possessing only a 40mm close defense AAG, and the rather lackluster Starstreak SPSAM. The french have both modern missile systems, the Roland SPSAM (an ok unit over all), and the AMX-32 MBT, which I have found useful in helicopter interdiction (it has a 20mm cannon that can attack heli units, which I usually use to clean up a weakened unit that I hammered with other weapons first).

SemperFi is right though, many battles with the French will see you utilizing their SPHs and their descent air forces with their Leclerc MBTs more as a defensive units to hold the line than as offensive units taking the charge to the enemy. When using the french, take full advantage of their numerous recon units, their SPHs, the Leclerc MBT (which is good, just not as good as other western made tanks, but it doesn't lack by much), and their Tiger heli, and even the gazelle when funds run low. Their tactics tend toward the conventional, but sometimes the french can surprise you.

Also, seeing that I love to do Amphibious Assaults, the French have a decent Amphibious Transport as well. This works well for putting a nice flanking tank assault or additional arillery support in certain situations much easier and much more difficult to stop.
